Attending Online College While In The Military

Posted on

Many times, when you are enlisted in the military, you can take steps towards your next job or career while you're still on duty. A good first step is to enroll in an online college program and begin working on your degree. But how do you succeed in college while also enlisted? Here are some tips.

Choose a program that is flexible

Some online programs are more flexible than others. Some, for example, require you to be a part of video chat classes at a certain time of day. Others just allow you to log on and complete the work on your own schedule — any time. Look for a program that has the second format so you're not stuck trying to schedule classes around your schedule with the military. Usually, programs that are advertised as being tailored towards military members have this format.

Start with a two-year degree

When you're in the military and your plans are not overly predictable, enrolling in a four-year program right off the bat might be a little much. Enrolling in a two-year program is a lot more doable; you probably have a better idea of where you'll be in two years than in four. Most two-year programs count towards a four-year program if you later decide to pursue more education. And if you decide to stop after a two-year degree, there are plenty of jobs out there, particularly in trade fields like electrical work.

Spend a little time on school each day

When you're busy in the military life, it's easy to keep putting off schoolwork to the next day, and the next day. Before you know it, you have not moved ahead at all. A good way to avoid this trap is to spend a little time on schoolwork each day — even if it's only 10 minutes on some days. This adds up. Some progress during a busy week is better than no progress during a busy week.

Get involved in chats

Most online college programs have forums and chat setups you can use to interact with the other students. Take advantage of these opportunities. Post questions, and answer questions that others have. This helps you engage more with the material, which will keep you motivated and moving forward.

With the tips above, you can have a successful online college experience while in the military. A whole new career is waiting for you on the other side!
